Frequently Asked Questions

Why Tallow?

Tallow is a time honored and tested, all natural, nutrient-dense whole food. We need long lasting nourishment for our skin, not a bad science experiment. Real nourishment is simple! It's minimal. It's not made in a lab. Tallow is naturally high in vitamin A, D, E, and K. To top it off, tallow is also bio-identical to the same oil sebum produced by human skin, meaning it works with your skins oil production. Tallow is safe for use on baby's, eczema, burns, rashes, the list goes on.

"Do not put on your skin what you can't/wont put in your body." We have drifted so far away from this simple idea that our ancestors instinctively knew. It's time to take your skincare regime back in time. Back before the billion dollar marketing, before the toxic synthetic chemicals and long lists of ingredients. Back to simple nourishment! Tallow is real skin nourishment, without the help of synthetic chemicals, harmful preservatives, or fillers. Just the way nature intended.

How do I use Tallow Balm?

Put a little bit of our Tallow Balm on your skin. You don't need much. Some people use it two times a day, while others use it less often. This balm can do amazing things for any part of your body or face. It's great for dry skin, acne, eczema, rashes, psoriasis, rosacea or even a little sunburn. You might notice a subtle and natural scent coming from the tallow. This is completely normal and will vanish within a minute of applying on your skin.

Will Tallow clog my pores?

No, it will not. This is a common misconception. Tallow scores very low on the comedogenic scale, much lower than coconut oil! This means tallow is very unlikely to clog your pores. Clogged pores are the result of lack of exfoliation, dead skin cells can then build up which over time will clog your pores. Oil based moisturizers, like ours, are crucial to get your skins oil production back on track. Tallow is practically bio-identical to the oil our skin naturally produces, this means tallow actually works with your skins natural oil production to deeply penetrate and hydrate the skin. Additionally, tallow is high in Conjugated Linolenic Acid (CLA) Which is very healing for many skin conditions and has anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Is Tallow good for eczema or psoriasis?

Yes! Tallow is fantastic on eczema or psoriasis. Tallow naturally contains Palmitoleic Acid which is also the most active anti-microbial found in human skin. Additionally, tallow contains both Stearic Acid and Oleic Acid. These fatty acids work together to deeply moisturize, soften, regenerate, and fight inflammation. Stearic Acid also enhances skin suppleness and elasticity. These nourishing, anti-microbial, and regenerative properties make tallow an excellent choice for a natural way of healing eczema. Many people suffering from eczema or psoriasis report that they can throw away their steroid creams after switching to tallow.

What does Tallow smell like?

Tallow smells very pleasant! Here at Skin Food, we are very proud of the tallow we use. Our tallow is gently rendered over a long period of time, producing a mildly pleasant scent all by itself.

Do I need to refrigerate it?

No, tallow does not need to be refrigerated. Tallow is an incredibly stable fat and has a very long shelf life. You don't have to worry about your tallow expiring for at least a year!

Why haven't I heard of Tallow before?

Great question! Tallow used to be a common staple, many old recipe books called for it! Legend has it, Cleopatra herself used tallow on her skin daily! Since Tallow has anti-microbial properties, it was also used to naturally treat different skin rashes and conditions as well.

However, around 1950 we were misled to believe that fat is the enemy and clogs your arteries. Therefore, everyone must switch to plant fats like vegetable oil/margarin. This couldn't have been further from the truth!

Vegetable oil is void of all of the healthy fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. Additionally, these vegetable oils are highly processed, synthetic, and better suited for a car than a human body.

Recently, people are becoming more aware that high-quality animal fat is a superfood and not to be feared!

Animal fats are making a huge come back and more and more people are discovering the power that this healthy fat has on the inside, and the outside! Tallow is real long lasting skin nourishment. Those who have tried tallow on their skin simply can't live without it.

Why do you add Jojoba Oil?

Jojoba oil's skincare benefits go hand in hand with the natural benefits of tallow. Jojoba oil boosts the Vitamin E content of our balm. Like tallow, jojoba oil is very close to the oil (sebum) your body naturally produces, so it feels light and is readily absorbed into the skin.

Both tallow and jojoba oil are non-comedogenic and do not clog pores. As tallow needs a small amount of carrier oil to help it whip nicely, deciding to use jojoba oil was a no brainer.

Our jojoba oil is of the highest quality, chemical free, cold-pressed and organic.

What breed of cattle is your Tallow from?

Our suet tallow strictly comes from the Scottish Highland breed. They have been grass-fed and pasture raised on Dutch land and have had no vaccines or antibiotics.

Where does your Tallow come from?

Our tallow comes from a small organic biodiversity farm that is situated inside of a transitioning program for young adults with learning disabilities. Currently, the farm produces all the beef, pork, chicken, and eggs needed by the students in the program!

How long will it take to receive my Tallow Balm?

Each order is produced on the same day it is ordered to ensure maximum freshness. We do our very best to ship out each order within 24-48 hours. We ship out orders Monday-Friday.

Domestic shipping with DHL usually takes 2-3 days to arrive, and international shipping takes 7-10 business days. We have not noticed any delays with shipping.

My Tallow Balm looks different than the last one I ordered, why is that?

That is because tallow is different and just as unique as the animal it came from! This is also a factor as to why every batch of balms we make come out slightly different than the previous batch.

All tallow reacts differently when whipped and air is incorporated into it. Sometimes the creams come out more balmy in texture, and others more creamy/mousse-like in texture.

We don't try to stifle this natural reaction and embrace the difference! Rest assured, regardless of texture and color, we always use the same top quality approved ingredients, and in the same ratios. It will have the same effect on your skin :)
